The YMCA Addresses Pre-diabetes Locally and Nationally
March 28, 2016
An article published on NPR on March 23, 2016 titled Diabetes Prevention Program Will Save Medicare Money, HHS talks about the national effort to address pre-diabetes by offering the diabetes prevention program at YMCA's across the county. Health & Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell stated at a press conference in Washington D.C. that "the program improves health care quality while reducing health care costs." The program was funded with funds from an innovation grant under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This is the first prevention program to meet the requirements for Medicare reimbursement under the ACA. Rules that would allow for Medicare to pay for this preventative service will be proposed this summer by the Department of Health & Human Services. Securing reimbursement for programs like these could result in increased access for those in need and reduced health care spending over time.
This development is in line with the goals of the Prevention First 1305 Project in Monterey County. Locally, the Central Coast YMCA has begun offering the Diabetes Prevention Program for those diagnosed with pre-diabetes or those that may be at high-risk for developing pre-diabetes.
